For me creativity started with wax crayons and for paper, ironed sugar bags at three years old.
From then on I was hooked. Discovering colour, form, shape and shadow became a mission. Art school, college, raising a family, work, and teaching followed and although life often got in the way, creative art and its discovery was never completely ignored.
Artwork demanded my attention and had to be maintained in one form or another.
Having learnt to embroider early on; the discovery of creative textiles became another texture to add to the creative mix. Predominately a water colourist; textiles give another outlet for a fascination with nature in all its facets. Gathering information photos, sketches, fabrics, threads, shells, beads, books served to feed that fascination and inspire. A journey begins with each painting or panel. Each one starts with a single inspirational idea and is pursued to its eventual outcome.
Working in watercolour, mixed media, and textiles, I try to use a variety of techniques and materials. Subjects range from flora to wide open spaces. Moving from one art field to another, developing ideas into final pieces, often using a series of sketches, original photos and materials found at source. These tell a new story. I work to finish a theme and discover new ideas to begin a new journey before moving on.
Inspiration may come from a colour, a texture, a memory, a thought. Sometimes this is evoked by a scene or an object. It may be an illusion, a window on a world so far undiscovered by me; but a new journey and a new learning process starts.
